Description

This is the re-re-run of the 2016 British Surf Kayak Championships that were cancelled due to conditions. And the re-run in March.

Venue

Sandymouth Beach, Bude, Cornwall, EX23 9HW

This is a National Trust beach so (as you normally do) please respect and look after it for yourselves and others.

Unfortunately no tents or vans allowed - as we're hitting peak summer season with this re-re-run.

This is a National Trust site so being a member will save you quite a few pennies when it comes to car park costs.

Entries

Entries are in advance and to be paid no later than Sunday the 25th June. Anyone who entered and paid for the cancelled British Open in Portrush can transfer their entry at no cost to this re-run. (There are no refunds for people not able to make the re-run as of yet, we shall look at the pot after the event and figure something out from there). As this is the 2016 British Open, age rules are as in 2016. Ie a Junior in 2016 can enter this event as a Junior.

Due to new legislation from British Canoeing, every competitor has to be a member, or a member of their own local governing body. Please sign up before entering. No 1 day passes will be handed out on the day.

Food to be held at Sandymouth Cafe (on site). Choices are;

  • Chicken curry with rice, mango chutney and poppadom
  • Beef lasagna with salad and garlic bread
  • Vegetarian lasagna with salad and garlic bread

  • Apple and cinnamon crumble with custard or ice cream

  • Pavlova with fresh fruit and cream

£10 per head

Competition is on!! 28 Jun 2017 @ 19:55

Hi all,

The competition is on! Finally!! We are going to have a wave, it wont be especially pretty, but it'll do the job!

So the plan;

  • Friday 30th June; 6.00-7.30pm Boat check in down at the Crooklets Surf Life Saving Hut. Don't worry if you cant make it, just turn up earlier on Saturday. We shall be checking the kayaks meet the requirements for the classes, are in a suitable condition, have toggles on both ends and air bags. This can also be used to act as a register to write up the heats. If you cannot make the Friday night, please contact either Jack Barker or Chris Skardon to ensure we can add you to the register for heats.

  • Saturday Morning; 7.30am Gather at 7.30am for boat check-ins if missed on Friday 8.00-8.30am Further check ins then safety briefing for 8.30am 9.00am First heat on the water. 5.00/6.00pm Finish for the day.

    7.00pm meal at Sandymouth Cafe. Everyone who has bought a meal ticket will be entitled to a meal. Menu to be given to us when we sit.

  • Saturday Night - We have been asked by the National Trust that we don't stay in vans on the Car Park overnight.

  • Sunday; 8.00am Gather for a briefing for 8.30am 9.00am - First heat on the water. Later on, on Sunday. Prize giving and award ceremony. Time not confirmed.

Thats it! I hope to see you all there.

If anyone knows of someone that would be willing to be paid to judge for the day. Please let us know. As we are currently a couple short.

See you Friday!

Jack Barker and Chris Skardon

Camping overnight - no-go :( 21 Jun 2017 @ 13:54

Hi guys 'n' gals,

We have a bit of bad news regarding the camping overnight situation - hot off the press - the NT have said we can't camp overnight - as we're in the Summer season now.

We're really sorry for the inconvenience this causes, we'd been pushing for a long time to try to get it sorted, but it was out of our hands :(

All the best,

Chris & Jack

Competition postponed 15 Mar 2017 @ 22:03

Hi guys,

I regret to inform you that i don't think its safe enough to run the competition this weekend. I am sorry if this has ruined some peoples plans, but I do not of know anyone that wants to paddle in the surf that's been forecast.

We will release a re-re-run date as soon as possible.

I realise a few people are still heading down. So please get in contact with myself or each other and we will try and meet up. There will be spots along the Cornish and Devon coasts that could be working.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Thanks and Regards

Jack Barker Chairman, Bude Canoe Club

Surf Check Update 14 Mar 2017 @ 23:58

Hi to all competitors and families,

At the moment it looks like this;

Unfortunately we have a pretty severe storm hitting us this weekend according to the forecasts. And its just our luck that either side of it there is some lovely surf to be had.

Friday and Saturday look like writeoffs due to the 10-11ft, 8sec swell with 30+mph winds. Sunday looks as is if its easing off, but realistically for 4-6 hours of daylight.

I have to think about the safety of all competitors above all else. As well as the team we have on the beach as Lifeguards and First Aid. These are the guys that would be fishing people out of the water if it came to it.

I have had a chat with both Glyn Brackenbury and Chris Hobson, we have all decided that unless the forecast significantly improves by Wednesday 15th March at 9pm, I will be forced to postpone/call off the competition.

This isn't what i want to do, and I know a lot of you are travelling long distances to get here, and that's why I'm giving you a heads up now.

So to re-iterate. A final call for the competition will be made on Wednesday 15th March at 9pm. However the chance of it running at the moment is slim.

Thanks and Regards

Jack Barker Chairman of Bude Canoe Club
